Orgiva is situated between the Chico and Guadalfeo rivers and is the main town andOrgiva river administrative centre of the Alpujarras. It is 400 metres above sea level and its microclimate gives it warm temperatures throughout the year. This means you can use the pool between April and October

Activities in the area

Walking, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, horse riding, 4x4, fishing and hunting.

History

After the Moorish conquest of Granada, Orgiva and the district known as La Taha was granted to the sons of the Sultan Muley Hacén and Isabel de Solís during the Nazarene period. Later it was given over to Boabdil, the last Muslim King of Granada. In 1488 it was granted to the ‘ Great Captain’ Gonzalo Fernández of Cordoba for his loyalty to the Crown. Since 1839 by order of Queen Isabel ΙΙ Orgiva became the administrative centre that it is today.

Monuments

Gothic church: In the centre of town. Built in the 16th Century and boasts fine crOrgiva bridgeaftsmanship from the Granada School of the 17th Century.

Palace-castle building: Built in the 17th Century on the site of a fortified tower. It belongs to the Counts of Ságasto, direct heirs of the ‘Great Captain’. It now houses Orgiva’s town hall.

The Chapel of Saint Sebastián.

The Necropolis: A set of 7 graves.

Fiestas

San Sebastián: Celebrated on the 20th of January.

The Big Fair of Orgiva: Takes place at the end of September and the beginning of October.

Cristo de la Expiración: This is celebrated on the Friday before Good Friday.
